Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) is used in new products, such as paving roads and new designs for alternative fuels. RAS reduces the negative impact on the environment.

Asphalt shingles are made from the same four basic materials contained in Hot Mix (HMA) used in road construction. Using RAS minimizes the amount of virgin resources used in hot mix production, lowering the cost for paving.

Midwest Shingle Recycling specializes in contract on-site grinding of tear off shingles. Thousands of tons of waste shingles are buried in landfills each year. Together we can change that. MSR's goal is to work with communities to coordinate a network of collection sites for the storage and transfer of acceptable residential asphalt shingles to be turned into RAS.

Q. What are Acceptable Residential Asphalt Shingles?

A. Acceptable Residential (Non-Asbestos) Asphalt Roofing Shingles that are segregated, non-hazardous and uncontaminated materials. Asphalt shingles may include nails and tar paper backing. Midwest Shingle Recycling recognizes that customers may, from time to time, have small amounts of non-hazardoous paper, plastic, metal, and wood mixed with the recyclable shingle material.

Midwest Shingle Recycling and its processing facilities will not accept loads of roofing material when more than 50% of the load contains non-shingle or non-recyclable materials.

At this time, MSR can only accept asphalt shingles. For other materials, such as tile, cedar shake or rolled roofing, contact your local government to find other solutions for recycling.
